At Rio Piedra Plantation our quail hunting experience isn’t just enjoyable — it’s award winning. The unique location, fine dining, well-appointed accommodations and exceptional attention to detail at our quail hunting lodge has helped us earn awards from Orvis and Sporting Classics.
Rio Piedra Plantation is the only 3-time recipient of the Orvis Wingshooting Lodge of the Year Award. We received the award in 2001, 2002, and 2010 — a triple feat that no other hunting lodge has achieved.
The annual Award of Excellence honors the “best of the best” products and services that have a significant impact on the sporting industry. Sporting Classics named Rio Piedra Plantation the Hunting Lodge of the Year in 2009.

On an early December morning, a longleaf pine seed spirals to the ground unnoticed. Mist off the Flint River sifts through waist-high wiregrass, lending substance to empty spaces. The scene is a softened melody of golds and browns and silver greens, all hushed in the edgling day, a parochial palette be tting the cathedral silence. It’s a crinkled carpet of a forest oor and a bristle of a canopy, a phalanx of sentinel trunks at attention … and then somewhere in the muf ed moments, the lonesome call of a bobwhite quail, cutting the morning stillness without ambiguity.

In 1540 the army of Hernando de Soto clanked across a river that the Spanish conquistador dubbed Rio Piedra (“River of Rocks”) in what is now South Georgia at a place known as Sisters Islands. “We serve an al fresco lunch there for our guests on pretty days,” said 69-year-old Bill Atchison, owner of Rio Piedra Plantation, whose grounds encompass the fording site on the Flint River. “Can you imagine seeing de Soto crossing with 600 soldiers, 200 horses and 300 pigs?”
